On the Head-Cleaners website there are pages describing hypnosis CDs and hypnosis tapes individually and describing combinations of tapes and CDs that might help with certain issues like performance anxiety, depression, stress or dieting. There is also a wide variety of articles, some brief and some lengthy, reflecting the thoughts of a psychologist who believes life is happiest, most empowered, most interesting and fun and healthiest - physically, psychologically and spiritually - if approached with practicality and compassion as guiding values. There are also a few incidental pages about this and that on the website. And then there are many pages of links -- resources. There are pages of links to dieting websites, anxiety websites, health websites, medicines websites, and many more. I was asked one day why the pages of links on the Head-Cleaners site seemed so un-cool -- so out of keeping with the general look and feel of the rest of the site. The basic answer to that question lies in the very different underlying motivations behind the links pages versus the rest of the site. The links pages are compiled primarily to meet the needs of the website - in order to obtain a ranking on search engines that gets the site seen. Secondarily, the links pages are compiled for visitors. In contrast, the rest of the Head-Cleaners website is compiled primarily to meet the needs of visitors - in order to provide a service to visitors (in keeping with the principal of practicing what one preaches). Secondarily, the website is compiled to be search engine ranking -friendly. When a visitor comes to the Head-Cleaners website, links that are intended to be strongly recommended as helpful with respect to some issue will be found with articles on those issues. Links intended to simply provide a resource without much actual recommendation of "wow" behind them will be presented on a links page - a page of just links. Why exactly does there need to be pages and pages of links? Search engines decide how to rank a particular website on the basis of how often links to that website are discovered as they "spider" the world wide web. This "spidering" thing is a process of visiting all the websites known to exist in cyberspace and recording all the links that each of those sites cites. The number of times, for example, that a link to the Head-Cleaners site or one of its articles, is tallied and the ranking position that the search engine decides upon is based on that tally. Links on other hypnosis sites count more than links found on sites that are focused on something other than hypnosis (i.e., focused on teddy bear hugging strategies). This is the most basic, most important issue in webmastering - search engine placement. For sites that have backing of expensive and vast resources, they don't seem to need to deal with links themselves. They can advertise on television and in other media and they become known, popular and linked to. But for small websites and energetic but poor webmasters -- which is most webmasterss -- it is best to contact other webmasters and ask if a reciprocal exchange of links can be agreed upon. Thus, a webmaster wanting to assure that there are many instances of his site being linked to out there in cyberspace should email other webmasters and offer a reciprocal linking deal. This is how many websites - usually the smaller ones - seem to decide they should offer a gazillion links while other websites - usually the bigger or more immediately widely known - seem to limit their link recommendations to just a few.
