Which tapes will help me with social anxiety and speaking in front of groups during presentations and one on one conversation to help me control my blushing, sweating, shaking and overall anxiety." e m a i l a n s w e r Confusing. Hmmm... Sorry. You ask which tape will help with anxieties that make you sweat, blush, feel self-conscious. Many of them may help you -- each in a different set of ways. That's the short answer. I can elaborate and this will be a longer answer than you wanted but please be patient with me and you may find it worth while: Your anxieties are caused or controlled or contributed to by a number of interacting elements of your physiology, experience, attitude, perspective and your social and financial situations. Different tapes would have different specific effects but all the tapes will reduce anxiousness, blushing, sweating, shaking. It sounds confusing because you're wanting to know which one does the trick and the answer is that several will do the trick, each in a different way. You also may be thinking there should be a hypnosis tape that tells you that you cannot and will not tremble or blush or sweat in social situations. There may be such a tape out there available in cyberspace but direct, heavy-handed "orders" like that in a hypnosis context can be hurtful and can actually increase anxiety in some individuals. Performance 2 would make you feel a bit more relaxed in general and you would find yourself realizing afterwards that social interactions seem to be happening without as much anxiousness. The suggestions suggest letting yourself just do what you need to do in performance-type situations without a lot of thinking and self-critiquing.. Less critical and anxious thinking results in less sweating, blushing, trembling. A listener might find herself realizing after a meeting or a lunch that it was almost like she was just confidently operating on instinct without needing to think at all about many of the things that would have otherwise seemed so important to worry about. Now to how to soothe out angst focuses on thinking strategies that foster a sense of resiliency and hopefulness as a counter to vaguely defined, chronic feelings of anxiousness or unhappiness. The listener should notice now and then through the next day or so after listening that she or he feels light hearted and more hopeful -- not to the extent that he or she feels silly, just noticeably more hopeful and positive. When one feels more hopeful, resilient and self-confident, one sweats, trembles, blushes and panics less. Self to self partnering focuses on not being hostile and abusive to one's self -- self directed frustration, anger, etc. -- and the listener who had such issues would feel more hopeful and positive about herself in general and in situations where she might otherwise feel much more anxious and might tremble, sweat, etc. Relax..relax... focuses on being able to relax while staying very alert and able to optimally think and react. For the listener who tends to be anxious about relaxing because relaxing feels like letting down one's guard, she would, using this tape, tend to be more relaxed at meetings or in social situations because of increased relaxation skills that make alertness possible without tension and trembling; she would be less nervous and would therefore sweat less, etc. Nightmares to nice dreams focuses on having empowering, positive dreams which can affect one's waking life by making one feel generally more positive and self-assured and therefor less likely to be anxious or blushing or whatever in social situations. Now, just to be thorough -- or more thoroughly confusing -- let me also explain how these hypnosis tape experiences help and what you might expect. You try a tape by listening once or twice and seeing if you feel better or not. If not, you return the tape and I return your $34. (Listening entails setting aside about an hour where you won't be disturbed and just kicking back and letting your mind listen or wander as you hear my voice in one ear saying one set of things and my voice in your other ear saying either the same things or slightly different things.) If you do feel better after listening, it wouldn't be better like you died and went to Heaven. And it wouldn't be better like you were suddenly a completely different person. You would feel better like when a weight lifts off of you that you've been carrying for a long time. You will still be anxious at times but you will feel anxious less often and less intensely sometimes. You then might want to listen again to the tape the next day. Or you may choose to hold off for a few days and see how you feel. There is a lot of variability to how people seem to like to use hypnosis tapes but many listen once each day or so for the first three or four days and then just whenever it seems they need a booster. I generally tell people something along the lines of, "Use the Force, Luke," (also known as, use your own judgement or when the whim strikes you) in deciding how often and when to listen. What the tapes focus on and try to help you do can basically be divided into two categories. First, the tapes will target its specific goal. (For performance 2, for example, as noted above, the specific target is a reduction of nagging, anxious, self-conscious thinking.) Second, the tapes will target relaxation skills, improved self-esteem, practicality and be-happy-even-if-stuff-is-tough stuff. Listening to one of my tapes is like listening to an interesting, spacey performance and the effect is basically what one might expect of a handful of therapy sessions. Results that you get from my hypnosis tapes are very much like the results you might get from someone you respect (a counselor or a friend) talking you into seeing things from a different perspective -- a perspective different from the perspective you usually take on things and that may cause or support anxiousness. From the new perspective things seem much better and life more hopeful and made you feel more confident. ("Oh, when I look at it that way, it's a lot better!") For most of us, though, when we get a new way of looking at things, we may find ourselves hours or days later forgetting how we got there in our head -- how we were looking at things that made them seem better. So we rack our brain to remember or we go to the friend or counselor and ask, "How was it, again, that it made so much sense to see such and such as such and such?" Or in the case of the hypnosis tape, we listen again. And this is the process -- getting it and forgetting it and getting it again and losing track again -- and as the new way of thinking is reinforced by thinking and reminding, it gets forgotten less often. Now, again, different tapes would have different results, as detailed above. So, if the first tape you try seems helpful, then other tapes could be added to what would be a library of condensed counseling/hypnosis anti-anxiousness, pro-hopeful tapes that you could use to first get you thinking about things in a more positive fashion and then serve to give you a booster shot at any time you wanted -- and, also, that you could listen to at times of unusually intensified stress or distress like one takes benadryl for a bee sting. Try one. Pick one that you think might be a good start for you. Put names in a hat and draw one or flip a coin or something. Just try one. If you like it, you'll feel the price is well worth it and adding other tapes will be too. If you don't find it helpful, send it back.
