kids & youngsters & children & such performance anxiety & test anxiety unveiled - unraveled - revealed what performance anxiety and test anxiety are Performance anxiety is the term used for a situation where a person becomes anxious about performance quality to the extent that anxiety symptoms (hypervigilence, self-criticisms, upset, etc.) cause a reduction in performance quality. It is a self-fulfilling prophesy situation. Worry that performance will be poor causes performance to be poor. Performance anxiety can also, in some cases, cause a person to want to avoid thinking about the performance -- which in turn results in also wanting to avoid preparing for the performance. Test anxiety is when a person has performance anxiety about tests. This happens because our brain-body setup has mechanisms that have been in our makeup for the past 60,000 years which are set up to make a person quickly able to handle sudden danger from a lion, tiger, bear (oh, my) or similar. When these mechanisms activate it results in a) reduced complex thinking abilities, b) increased vision and hearing sensitivity and c) increased muscle tension -- resulting in decreased performance and, ironically, failure. Added to this, our modern minds add in negative self-talk and self-criticism and, for a little added spice, catastrophizing ("I'm going to fail and my life will be a disaster from then on!"). This is a terrible thing to happen when you want to be "in the zone" for a sports performance or a test. Test situations are possibly the routinely messed up by test-anxiety, performance-anxiety, because while needing to think about and remember things, that part of the brain is basically shut off. While it is necessary to focus on the test at hand, the eyes and ears are being hyper vigilent for any movements or sounds in the environment. Rather than facts and figures in the mind, all sorts of self-talk about failure fills the consciousness. These mechanisms are mediated and activated by very basic, very primative mechanisms in the part of the mind that is typically called "unconscious." No person can say to him- or herself, "Knock it off, chill out" and expect that to work because the warning signal is happening at an unconscious level of thinking. what makes it worse You can experiment a bit in this area, but here are some basics: 1) Tell your child it is very important that he or she NOT fail. Tell him or her that there will be terrible, dangerous consequences and/or loss of future support and love if he or she fails. 2) Yell when you talk about the performance or test. 3) Look down on the child -- tell him or her or suggest subtly that failure will mean the child's basic worth is diminished or erased. 4) Tell the child he or she is a looser, assuming he or she will try to prove you wrong. 5) Scream at your child's other parent that this is his or her fault. 6) Suggest that the child is a total loss. what can be done You can experiment a bit in this area, too, but here are some basics: 1) reward effort rather than results, 2) praise improvement rather than absolute ranking (e.g., a "D" on a test should be praised if "F" is the past performance), 3) avoid all the things listed above and anything else you discover that might make things worse. 4) Tell your child that failure is part of life and no big deal. 5) Assure your child that because failure is a part of success, failures can bring success later. 6) Assure your child that no matter what happens as far as his or her performance goes, you will always see him or her as your hero and as one of the best successes on the planet. 7) Reward and praise effort more than results. 8) Value improvement above perfection. 9) Counseling can help parents and child understand what the big fears and concerns are and what might be making them worse ("Oh, gosh, so I shouldn't ground him for not getting first place?"), 10) Use hypnosis -- either through a therapist or recording to try to turn down some of the concern that lingers at an unconscious level of thinking. "Successive approximations to a goal." This is a scientific term for rewarding little steps toward where you want to get to. It is very important to understand that praising improvement from an "F" to a "D" is, in the long run, more likely to get a child up to getting an "A" than is a strategy of withholding praise until total excellence happens. This is a well researched, widely accepted fact of life. Praising "D" behavior does not make a child complacent and happy with that "D" unless you or conditions are also making it very threatening to try for better. |
