in keeping count of mistakes

an important awareness for an optimized life

If you harbor the belief that most of your choices
turn out to be mistakes, you've made a mistake

So many people seem to think that they make a lot of mistakes. This "belief" seems to contribute to depression and anxiety for many of those folks.

You really can't survive if most of your decisions turn out badly. A person wouldn't survive till sundown.

From the moment you wake up, you are making decisions, on average, several to many times a minute. Just getting out of bed and going to the bathroom takes hundreds to thousands of decisions -- most of which, if you make them right, you don't notice.

For anyone thinking he or she mostly makes mistakes, the problem is the data-gathering.

Everyone I've talked to who has this opinion of their "track record" with respect to mistakes and successes is making the same mistake. They are keeping track of each time they make an error and never keeping track of making successes. The tally then, is always a bunch of mistakes versus no successes whatever.

The fact is, if you are walking around breathing, most of your decisions are perfectly sound.

It's important to be as reasonable as possible about how you assess your actions, mistakes and success. There is a lot of mystery and questions in life. If you don't know you made an error, it makes no sense to assume that you did.
